Are you ready to explore? The Outdoor Center is a perfect base camp for exploration among meadows, wetlands, and forests at Greylock Glen and adjacent Mount Greylock State Reservation. More than 27 miles of trails traverse this diverse landscape.
Greylock Glen encompasses 1,063 acres nestled at the foot of the eastern slope of Mount Greylock, which at 3,489 feet is the Commonwealth’s highest peak. The Glen is bounded on the west by Mount Greylock and the slope of Ragged Mountain, on the east and south by low ridges, and to the north by a low ridge east of the former Thiel Farm.
The historic Thunderbolt Ski Trail on Mount Greylock is accessed through the Glen and attracts skiers from around the country who want to experience a challenging backcountry run, much as it would have been in the days before ski lifts and trail grooming. Today, as weather permits, the Glen is also a popular destination for snowshoeing and cross -country skiing.
Several ponds punctuating the Glen’s open meadows are now an intrinsic part of Greylock Glen’s natural beauty. Would it surprise you to learn they were created as water hazards within the 18-hole golf course developed here in the 1970s? The course was an element of one of several failed resort projects proposed for the property over the past several decades. Young woodlands have now hidden the foundation of a 350-room hotel (known locally as the “rebar forest”).
